Job Title:                     Senior Regulatory Counsel

Job Summary:             Responsible for the oversight and management of one or more US compliance segments, such as Regulatory Affairs, Products, Filings, Licensing, Claims, LA&H, Privacy or Corporate Secretarial.

 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Manage colleagues assigned to their compliance segments, providing them with appropriate levels of training, coaching, mentoring and oversight.
  • Ensures that legislative changes and proposals relevant to their compliance segments are properly monitored, and that colleagues, management and affected personnel are advised accordingly.
  • Accountable within their segment that Beazley is compliant with federal and state regulatory requirements, as well as Beazley’s standards.
  • Called upon, as necessary, to review and draft contracts, proposals, marketing agreements, RFPs, NDAs, producer agreements, manuals, policies, customer service letters, and other business documents.
  • Review and draft materials provided to regulators, or in response to legal proceedings.
  • Conduct legal research and provide written and verbal legal opinions on a variety of insurance and business issues.
  • Interact and negotiate with regulators and other government officials, including responding to data calls, inquiries, market conduct examinations and investigations.
  • May be called upon to develop and deliver regulatory and compliance training programs, or other communications to staff. 
  • Provide due diligence for acquisitions, new program business, third party administrators, vendors and new products.
  • Develop, draft update and provide guidance on corporate policies and procedures, as necessary. 
  • Perform other functions related to regulatory compliance and legal counsel at the direction of management.
  • Manage outside legal counsel and other service providers to ensure effective and cost-efficient services.
  • Conduct internal investigations as directed by management.
  • Report to boards and committees as required.

  • Carry out additional responsibilities as individually notified, either through your objectives or through the learning management system.  These may include membership of any Beazley committees or working groups.

 

Personal Specification:

Education and Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate (JD) and member in good standing of a state bar association; CT bar or CT Authorized House-Counsel

  • 10+ years in legal/compliance capacity supporting the insurance industry or other appropriate experience

  • Strong and effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrable ability to work well in teams, or alone

  • Highly motivated with the ability to manage time, meet deadlines and prioritise

  • Strong knowledge of both the admitted and surplus lines insurance markets and regulatory environment

  • Has a proven ability to effectively manage people, either as a direct line manager, or a project manager leading others

  • Strong relationships with state insurance department personnel

  • Demonstrable ability to provide relevant, accurate and timely management information

  • Extensive experience in performing regulatory research with a superior ability to review, analyse and evaluate statutes, regulations and other materials to provide targeted, timely and well-crafted guidance to the business

  • Good working knowledge of MS Office
