Trainees will be recruited from the top 25% of the student population.

Description

The post-M.Sc. Designer Programme "Process and Equipment Design" enrolment is limited to 12 PDEng trainees per year. Therefore the selection procedure is severe. The applicants must have above average ratings and must be highly motivated to ensure completion of the traineeship within two years. The programme welcomes applications from well-qualified students who have successfully completed 5 years of university training (M.Sc., Ir., Drs.). Graduates with diverse backgrounds are admitted:

  • Chemical Engineering or Biochemical Engineering
  • Applied Mechanical Engineering, with a specialization related to chemical engineering, such as Industrial Process Equipment and Energy Systems
  • Applied Earth Sciences, with specialization Raw Material Processing or Petroleum Engineering
  • Physical Technology
  • Other, with equal merit, within the discretion of the Selection Committee

The Selection Committee judges the incoming applications by the criteria mentioned. When a first evaluation turns out positive, the applicant is invited for an interview to ascertain suitability for the course. Prior to this interview the Selection Committee sometimes will request further written information or additional references. The official regulation concerning the admission procedures can be obtained upon request.

At the start of the course, every PDEng trainee drafts an individual training programme. The programme depends on skills and interest. Part of the programme is compulsory, part of it is optional. For trainees who must remedy M.Sc. level gaps, advanced M.Sc. level subjects are available. The training co-ordinator who acts on behalf of the Programme Committee, must approve the training programme. The subject of the individual design project will be determined at the end of the first year.

Each participant will have a mentor for the duration of the course. The scientific co-ordinator of the course will act as mentor in the first year, the professor responsible for the individual assignment will act as mentor in the second year. After one year progress is evaluated. For admission to the second year all first year subjects must be completed.

The programme takes two years (3400 hours) and is divided into four phases.

A general description of these phases can be found here.

  1. Broadening phase )___ (together: 1100 hours)
  2. Deepening phase )
  3. Group Design Project (600 hours)
  4. Individual Design Project (1700 hours)

All courses are taught in English.

The two-year position leads to a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) degree, and is focused on integrating several disciplines in order to innovatively design Chemical Processes and Process Equipment. The gained expertise is in much demand and therefore this programme offers very good prospects for a professional future career in the Dutch and international chemical industries.
