Software Engineer - OpenStack DevOps

Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, is seeking an engineer to play a key role in the Ecosystem Engineering team, the team modeling OpenStack with Juju on Ubuntu.

This position is 100% work from home and may involve international travel a couple times a year, usually for one week at a time.



  • Deploy OpenStack on Ubuntu with Juju and MAAS on a variety of architectures such as x86, Power8, System Z.

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of a CI system to test Ubuntu debian package updates as well as Juju Charm updates.

  • Collaborate with team members to resolve issues found in CI, and ensure OpenStack deployed with Juju is ready for release.

  • Develop integration and functional tests to ensure OpenStack modeled with Juju is performing and operating as expected.

  • Identify, isolate, and document bugs clearly and concisely.

  • Collaborate with team members to design performant highly reliable software.

  • Collaborate with OpenStack upstream, and keep up-to-date on OpenStack project direction.



  • Experience in deploying and operating an OpenStack cloud

  • Experience with OpenStack deployment and configuration

  • Knowledge of OpenStack architecture

  • Experience with participation in the OpenStack community

  • Python software development experience

  • Experience in developing and maintaining Continuous Integration (CI) services.

  • Experience in developing integration and functional tests.

  • Test driven development and continuous integration development methodologies.

  • Agile development skills, specifically frequent iterations with stakeholders.

  • Strong communication and teaming skills; specifically with customer facing engagements.

  • Strong English language communication and presentation skills, including the ability to translate technical content into layman's terms.

  • Comfortable with online communication and collaboration such as mailing lists, IRC, wiki.

  • Excellent logic, problem solving and troubleshooting skills.

  • Ability to be productive in a globally distributed team.
