Technical Lead - Juju Core Networking

Location: Home based - North America or Europe


Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, is seeking a lead technical engineer on the Juju Networking team. This role is critical to the success of the Juju product. In this position, you will not just write code; but will be defining and solving very complex cloud networking problems within a model driven environment. Example problems include handling of overlay networks, public and private networks on a single L2 device across OpenStack, bare metal, containers and public clouds. These exciting challenges  make our customer’s experience modeling Big Software like OpenStack, Big Data and Kubernetes  across bare metal and public/private clouds a breeze.

Juju is the leading operations modeling tool. We aspire to be at the center of a revolution in the datacenter, moving from “hardware defined”  static resource allocation, to a new dynamic software defined datacenter. By bringing your in-depth cloud networking skills, this will enable our customers to build dynamic and scalable solutions to their orchestration problems.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Networking expertise, especially with modern network topologies and software defined networks.

  • Experience with production deployments and network configurations of OpenStack.

  • Experience with networking functionality of multiple major public cloud providers.

  • Understanding of container networks.

  • Expert in Linux networking fundamentals.

  • Knowledge of tun/tap devices, veth pairs, GRE tunnels, bridges, VLANS, network bonds, routing, iptables, L2/L3 topologies.

  • Experience with IPv6.

  • Experience with the Go programming language is a plus otherwise C or similar experience required.

  • Coordinate and prioritize work across a team of Juju Core developers; ensur e all team deliverables are completed on time.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders on needs and priorities.

  • Lead by example by being a respected and effective team lead on the juju-core networking project.

  • Help drive feature definitions, create documented specifications, and implement them while leading the Juju networking team.

  • Lead the scoping and planning of features and new development items.

  • Must be able to travel at least four times a year for a week at a time.

  • Provide managerial support for direct reports by:

  • Meeting with them regularly to discuss work, blockers and issues

  • Encouraging career growth and development

  • Handling required HR tasks, such as vacation approvals, yearly performance reviews, travel request approvals, etc
